2.3 Developing Learning Outcomes

2.3 Developing Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes are the foundation of most formal training. Each workshop and training you provide to instructors should be rooted in a set of learning outcomes. Learning outcomes can be complex, taking some time to formalize, and are rarely used in many adult learning environments (though they should be). Including learning outcomes in your training program is a valuable way to make your goals and intentions clear. Using learning outcomes in the beginning of your training program as well as throughout your feedback and evaluation process can also be helpful for checking in on the development of your team.

While we recognize you may not develop learning outcomes for all of the training in your program, it’s important to note that Actua-developed instructor and director training courses and materials are rooted in learning outcomes. If you do not want to create learning outcomes for all orientation, training and onboarding activities, at minimum you should answer the following two questions for everything you will teach:

  1. Why am I teaching this? Why is this important for people to learn?
  2. After people participate in this training, how do I expect their behaviour to be different?

By focusing on the meaning and purpose of what you are teaching, you will connect adult learners to the content and further strengthen their motivation to learn.

The University of Toronto has created an excellent and extensive guide on learning outcomes and how to craft them. It is attached below for your use as desired.
