Conclusion and Next Steps
Throughout this module we have reviewed and explored;
- The value of mentorship for youth mentees, mentors, your program, the national network, and you - instructors!
- Ideas about who can be a role model or mentor in your camp, club or event
- Ideas about the various event formats and ways in which mentors can participate in programming
- Steps and advice for finding, recruiting, and welcoming mentors
- A checklist with tips to use during your mentor event
- Steps for closing your mentor engagement events and ways to thank role models who support you
This module has emphasized the importance of mentorship and has highlighted some of the skills you personally can gain by planning, executing and closing mentor events. This process gives you insight into other forms of event planning and coordinating teams and external people such as event speakers or volunteers.
It is important to remember that your time as an instructor can prepare you for the career path you pursue in the future, regardless of what that career may be! The experiences you have in your instructor role are valuable to reflect on and articulate in other professional endeavours like resume writing, interviews, and future work contexts.
Activity
if you are working independently, consider the following question and reflect on your personal experience to respond. If you are working with others use a 'Think - Pair - Share' format for working through this question. This means 1) Consider your response 2) Pair with a buddy or two and exchange responses 3) Reconnect as a whole group and take turns sharing and capturing ideas shared with everyone.
Question: In this module you have had opportunities to develop or strengthen skills like; communication, building networks, teamwork & collaboration, self-awareness, planning and more. In your dream job, are these skills required? How could you describe planning and executing a mentorship event to highlight your skills?
