(After) Completing a Mentor Event and Next Steps
Wrapping up a mentor event is a key part of building the network and relationship between your program and the mentor.
Thank the mentor!
Sending a thank you note to the mentor is an important part of wrapping up the event. If you’re able, including a personal touch is very welcome. This might be;
- Youth signatures or thank you messages in a card, e-card, or video
- A group photo (photo permission required)
Important Reminder: When you are thanking a Knowledge Keeper or Indigenous Elder, be sure you are familiar with appropriate protocols for how to thank. There are often pre-determined processes for this, be sure to ask your director for guidance on how to do this.
Sharing the event on Social Media (when appropriate and approved)
Telling the story of a mentor visit or event can allow you to add a profile to your program, the mentor who came in and a chance to engage parents. Social media plans are usually carefully crafted and built into a wider plan. Talk to your director to see if social media is part of the plan for a specific event.
Additional story sharing
In addition to sharing your mentor event on social media, telling others about the event and capturing key details is important part of gaining support and profile for a network member program. Whether it’s used as a success story in a funder report, a public newsletter, or a board report, mentor events are often a story your director will want to tell. Be sure to check with your director what their reporting needs are.
Activity
Reflect on a meaningful way you’ve been thanked for work, what made this special and why? If you are working with other instructor staff through this module, work together to compile your ideas for future use when thanking mentors - and really anyone who supports or helps you!
