Introduction
Learning Goals
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Understand the role that feedback and evaluation plays in the development of instructors and programs
- Evaluate instructor performance using a combination of tools built for Actua network members
- Leverage various tools to facilitate effective 1:1 conversations with instructors
- Educate instructors on the performance management process you are using, so they find value in the process
Future Skills
When implemented as intended, these tools serve to ensure consistency in feedback and evaluation practices, but also support both you as program directors, and your instructors in being intentional about future skill development throughout their employment. Understanding that you have many priorities to manage, we know that you are looking for ways to make your role easier rather than adding any additional burden. With this in mind, we have intentionally kept the tools uncomplicated and easy to use. Beyond that, we are proposing that the entire performance enhancement framework be driven by the instructors- as they are the key players in their own development and research shows that employees who drive their own development are far more engaged than those who take a less active approach.
By implementing the tools and applying the learning from this course, you will be able to support your instructors in building the following future skills, with a few particularly relevant skills highlighted:
- Problem Solving
- Critical Thinking & Analysis
- Initiative
- Commitment
- Teamwork & Collaboration
- Communication
- Leadership
- Social Intelligence
- Adaptability & Flexibility
- Innovation & Creativity
- Ability & Eagerness to Learn
- Self-Awareness
- Building Networks
In particular, when implemented effectively, feedback & evaluation models will play a key role in building instructor’s communication skills through their one-on-one interactions with you as a leader, and in soliciting feedback from others. This framework will enhance their ability & eagerness to learn by encouraging them to take responsibility for their commitments, actions and their own personal development and by encouraging them to reflect and act upon barriers to personal achievement. Finally, this program will help instructors build self-awareness through the identification and recognition of their personal strengths and opportunities as identified by themselves and others through various feedback mechanisms. The program will support the instructors through intentional modification of their own behaviours or approaches to situations based on feedback received.
