General Tips
Here are a few general suggestions for how you might approach classroom management. In your team, what else might you add?
- Speak the same language
- This means ensuring that as a team, instructors are all on the same page and have collective understanding of the rules!
- Post Kid-friendly rules in every room
- Another great tip is to ensure students/campers have a role in determining some of the rules too (e.g., "We agree to listen when sharing ideas")
- Make it fun and engaging
- Be consistent, firm, and fair
- Document everything!
- See parents as resources - talk often and early
Exceptionalities
The information in this module is intended as non-specialist guidelines for classroom management in the general population. At times, you may find yourself in positions where participants present with medical or behavioural conditions that create persistent concerns for classroom management. You may also be working with youth that are facing socio-economic challenges, food insecurity, abuse, or other issues that you are not professionally trained to manage appropriately.
Work with your Director or other team leads to identify when a participant may need extra support. Parents, guardians, and other adults that interact regularly with a given participant can also be extremely valuable supports and help to identify strategies for working with that individual. In cases where professional support is needed, contact your program director to reach out to the appropriate community resources. Often, classroom management is a team effort; you should not try and tackle it alone!
