7. Leadership Tools
The tools provided below are examples and suggestions of things instructors can participate in or use as part of their Black Youth in STEM programming. They range from examples of culturally relevant content to examples of Black mentors that can be highlighted during programs.
- Activity: Understanding Curls with the Curly Chemist. Explore the physics behind elasticity and how properties of a spring can be related to both straight and curly hair.
- Activity: Exploring the Physics of Sound: The Talking Drum. Participants will learn about the Yoruba Talking Drum and the concepts of tension and pitch, as well as explore skills with digital audio and computer science.
- Activity: Community Mapping. This template serves as a way to get to know your students a little better by having them identify where their community is and how they interact with their surroundings.
- Diverse Career Spotlights: Here you will find profiles on diverse professionals working in different STEM fields that can be highlighted when planning lessons.
- End of Day Reports: Create a template to inform parents of the events that occurred that day and emphasize some ways they can continue the conversation about STEM at home.
