Case Study
The following is an optional case study learning activity.
The following TED Talk follows the story of engineer Debbie Sterling. Sterling has dedicated her career to engaging girls in STEM. Her work serves as an example of exceptional leadership in creating gender equity in STEM education and leaves us with much to consider as STEM educators.
Reflection Questions:
- Think about how Debbie Sterling adapted her program (in this case her prototype) to meet the interests and needs of the learner, rather than expecting the learner to conform to the parameters and design of the program. This is an important example of EQUITY rather than EQUALITY. Explain your thoughts on this.
How can you utilise and apply Sterling’s learning and approach to program design and delivery in your own STEM club or program?
